The best part about using full pelts is that the strips easily cater to whatever is being created. This part is easy, all you need to do is take the tanned hide and cut it into appropriate sized strips for the fly you want to make. There are other tanning processes that use eggs or other non-solution remedies. Mash up brain, in a bucket with just enough warm, not hot, water, till it makes a fairly thick paste. Once clean, lace skin into frame and let dry. Never salt a hide that you plan to braintan. It was my first time using this solution and I thought it worked fairly well. I've not done it in a long while, but do have the process written down around here somewhere. The primary issue is disposal of the used chemicals. What I've done is not a difficult process, but does require some chemicals. Some tanning processes remove the hair or require the hair to be removed, while others do not. I don't know about other tanning as far as use for Zonker strips but the garment process works fine. It doesn't make the hide waterproof, but resistant to water. It's the process used for making garments & the resulting tanned hide can be used in water without falling apart easily. I tanned hides with what is known as garment tanning.
